Learning Objectives
To understand the main elements concerning the contemporary migrations and relationships between populations belonging to different cultures. To project patterns of social mediation devoted to promote the integration or to face social conflicts between local and foreign population. To provide students with methodological knowledge in order to improve critical attitudes and technical skills enabling them to design and conduct ecological investigations on immigration.

Course program
To analyze theories (macro, meso and micro) concerning the explanation of migration processes. To examine in depth migration policies adopted by some European states according to three models: assimilation, cultural pluralism, multiculturalism. To take into consideration the presence of migrants in the Italian labor market considering the process of economic globalization. To identify the different strategies of integration according to gender or age differences. To analyze citizenship processes and recognition policies of rights (e.i. individual rights or collective rights). To analyze in depth some problematic issues such as the smuggling of migrants, trafficking in human beings, and the ambiguous relationships between immigration and criminality.
