Course Content
Topics are: (a) the impact of the environmental issue on markets and on politics; (b) strategies and policies implemented by economic actors and the inter-state system, with particular reference to the UN initiative to promote sustainable development; (c) evaluations and scenarios on sustainability policies (economic, social and environmental). The time horizon is that of the last fifty years.
The program includes the materials available on the Unifi e-learning platform Moodle, organized in five sections: (1) sustainability and evaluation of environmental policies; (2) the "Rio Process" [reconstruction and discussion of the trajectory from Stockholm 1972 to WCED 1987, Rio 1992, 2000 Millennium Goals, Johannesburg 2002, Rio + 20 2012, SDG 2015 until 2018]; (3) focus on emissions, climate change and its effects, UNFCCC [1992-2018]; (4) focus on the Convention on Biological Diversity [CBD]. A fifth section includes additional documentation and in-depth materials that are not part of the exam program. Other materials will be uploaded on the Moodle Unifi e-learning platform during the lessons. The program for non-attending students is also available on Moodle
Learning Objectives
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Provide students with information packages and theoretical interpretation tools that allow an adequate understanding of the political and economic relations between material growth-resources-environment-development
APPLYIED KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING: Support students in the empirical elaboration of the most current themes of this argument and improve their ability to argue through greater conceptual and linguistic variety.
MAKING JUDGEMENTS: Develop the ability to face the discussion on the pair environment-development with analytical and methodological wealth; foster the autonomy of thought on social, scientific and ethical related themes.
Prerequisites
This course (6 cfu, second semester) is the second module of the integrated course of 12 cfu GEOGRAPHY OF DEVELOPMENT, ENVIRONMENT, TERRITORY (12 cfu). The first module GEOGRAPHY OF DEVELOPMENT (first semester) is strictly preparatory.

Type of Assessment
Oral mode. Particularly the exam will verify: (1) information and knowledge on the topics of the exam schedule. (2) Accuracy of language, in particular the ability to use a correct descriptive and interpretative language. (3) Ability to combine the theoretical models presented in the lessons with the processes and the empirical evidences of the current scenario. The final evaluation will be the overall result of these three skills.
