The evolution of socio-demographic phenomena in Italy and Europe after WWII. Social policies, low fertility and ageing population. Second Demographic Transition and new family forms. Social inequalities. Migrations and immigrant integration in Italy and Europe. Topics are treated from both a theoretical and applied perspective. The course introduces to the empirical analysis of socio-demographic phenomena.

Learning Objectives
At the end of the course, the student will be able to understand the main socio-demographic problems of contemporary European societies.
COMPETENCES:
- Understanding demographic phenomena at the macro level and analysis of micro-mechanisms linking socio-economic factors and family behaviours at the individual level.
- Answering theory-driven socio-demographic research questions through secondary data analysis in Stata.
Prerequisites
Prerequisites: Some knowledge of statistics (regression models) and demography. Basic knowledge of the statistical software Stata is highly recommended.

Face-to-face lectures and lab sessions.

Given the hands-on approach of the course, students are strongly encouraged to regularly attend the lessons.
Type of Assessment
ATTENDING students: written and oral exam.
Students will have to produce a short paper which, starting from a research question based on the topics of the course, includes some statistical elaborations and their substantive interpretation. Such written part of the exam accounts for 50% of the final mark.
The oral exam is composed by at least three questions on the short paper and the overall programme and accounts for 50% of the final mark.
NON-ATTENDING students: oral exam on all topics of the course. For more information, non-attending students should contact the lecturer.

Migrations and immigrant integration in Italy and Europe. Introduction to the empirical analysis of socio-demographic phenomena.
