In the first part of the course the economic development theories are presented. In the second part seminars will be held on specific and new issues regarding globalisation with a special focus on China, and household economics and gender development. In the third part the main and new actors and the strategies of international aid, the types and amount of aid as well as the main challenges are introduced.

Learning Objectives
The course aims to allow the student to understand the problems of economic growth and development, sustainable human development, economic policy actions, the main characteristics of international cooperation and some current issues concerning globalization, the informal sector, gender issues, economic transition and Chinese and Indian economic development.
KNOWLEDGE:
Knowledge of the state of the debate on the most effective and valid ways of promoting development in the countries of the South of the world.
Knowledge of the economic and institutional characteristics of developing countries, of the main economic theories of development and of the economic policies implemented in the last three decades in emerging countries and of the role of the informal sector.
Knowledge of the actors of international cooperation, of the forms and policies of international aid and of the relationships between conflicts and human development.
SKILLS:
The student is able to present the main economic theories regarding development processes, the main economic policies implemented, the types of international aid flows, the relationships between donors and beneficiaries and the problems related to the fungibility and conditionality of aid. international.
The student is able to use the concept of human development and is familiar with the international debate regarding economic development.
Skills acquired at the end of the course:
The student is aware of the state of the debate on the most effective and valid ways of promoting development in the countries of the South of the world. The student has the ability to understand and define development program objectives and tools and to analyze case studies.
The student is able to interpret the types and flows of international aid also on the basis of origin, to understand the direct and indirect economic and social effects of international aid both at a macroeconomic and microeconomic level. The student is also able to reflect on the SDGs and to use the data of the OECD DAC on international aid for quantitative / descriptive analysis. He is able to set up a report on the topics covered in the course.

Course program
The course aims to illustrate the main theories of development from classical economists in the mid-1900s, discussing the relevance of modern growth models and the requirements of a development analysis with particular attention to the problem of institutions. The factors of development are then examined: the accumulation of capital, demographic growth, technical progress, the formation of human capital, international trade, the distribution of income, analyzing the particular economic, social and institutional conditions in which they operate in underdeveloped economies. After an introduction to the capability approach, they are illustrated through some specific and current thematic seminars and lectures concerning globalization with a focus on the economic development of China and India. In the final part, the main characteristics of international cooperation are presented. With regard to international aid, the course focuses on the analysis of the objectives, instruments and economic effects of development aid programs and projects.
