English.

Semester 1: Students will consolidate and extend language and cultural skills, listening, writing, and speaking at (post)intermediate level (progressing towards a B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages).

Semester 2: Workshops and seminar-based classes will have a broadly economic, political, and socio-cultural focus on key issues of inequalities and employment under neoliberalism.

All learning materials will be made available on Moodle. However, most of the materials for Semester 1 are drawn from the following Textbook:
Trappe, Tonya and Tullis, Graham. 2011. Intelligence Business (Intermediate) Coursebook, Pearson Longman.
Copies are available from the Library.

Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
1) Interact in most everyday social situations with confidence and fluency in their use of the English language;
2) Understand the development of a range of texts and vocabulary (including, but not limited to, Business English);
3) Understand and be able to discuss and reflect on cogent issues of the world of employment and neoliberalism in the Anglosphere;
4) Vary the tone and register of the oral and written texts they produce;
5) Read and be able to discuss academic and non-academic texts.

A variety of teaching approaches will be used in this course:
- Lectures and tutorials (including
listening and viewing activities);
- Workshops;
- Research activities;
- Role plays;
- Group activities;
- Short presentations.

The teaching focuses on student-centred learning. This teaching and learning approach provides facilitated learning, practical exploration and peer learning.

Participation in class and effort in speaking English are strongly encouraged.

Attendance policy: Attending students must participate in at least 70% of the course (17 classes across the two semesters)
Non-attending students must contact the instructor as soon as possible at the start of the course (September 2022)

A badge will allow students to receive the ‘idoneità’ as ‘Attending students’ at the end of Semester 2, upon successful completion of the following Assessment:
1) Moodle Activities (five Grammar and vocabulary quizzes);
2) Group project (five Comic strips, based on the discussions of pre-assigned readings/essays);
3) Oral presentation (in groups);
4) Final exam, which consists of four different sections: a) Listening; b) Reading; c) Grammar and vocabulary; d) Writing.

Students who miss one or more Assessment deadline(s) will automatically be moved to the ‘Non-attending’ cohort.

Non-attending students must contact the instructor as soon as possible at the start of the course (September 2022).

Semester 1: Students will study:
1) Pronunciation, grammar (tenses, syntax, and structures) of English for all purposes (Intermediate/Post-Intermediate level);
2) Vocabulary for professional purposes (CV, cover letter);
3) Vocabulary of Business English.

Semester 2: Workshop and seminar-based classes will consist of assigned readings and discussions of texts exploring intersecting axes of inequality (class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexualities, ability, age), with particular reference to the labour market. A full Bibliography will be provided on Moodle before the end of Semester 1.
