Curriculum Vitae
Piero Bini graduated with first class honours in "Economia e Commercio" at the University of Florence in 1974. After various research activities funded by the same University in the Seventies, he obtained the tenure of university Researcher in 1980. In 1987 he won a competition for Associated Professor in the History of Economic Thought and the year after took service with this tenure at the University of Macerata. Owing to a further competition, he became Full Professor at the same University in 2000. In consequence of his transfer he took service at the University of "Roma Tre" in November 2002. His experience as a teacher of History of Economic Thought, Political Economy and History and Theories of Public Intervention in the Economy at "Roma Tre" (Faculty of Political Sciences) proceeded until the a.a. 2014-2015. Since a.a. 2015-2016, he is Full Professor of History of Economic Thought at the University of Florence, Department of Economic and Business Sciences.
He has been the scientific director of the six-monthly review "Storia del Pensiero Economico" from 2004 to 2010. Since 2012 he is the Editor of the international review "History of Economic Thought and Policy". He is member of the editorial and scientific committees of other journals.
In the past, he has carried out the subsequent scientific-academic appointments: Scientific Director of the Research Laboratory "Fausto Vicarelli for the study of the relationship between Bank and Industry" in the period 1993-1999; Head of the graduate program in Banking, Finance and Insurance at the Faculty of Political Sciences of Macerata (year 2001); Head of the graduate program in Economics and Firm Management at the Faculty of Economics of Macerata (year 2002); Head of the graduate program in Public Administration at the Faculty of Political Sciences of "Roma Tre" in the period 2006-2009.
Since 2001 to 2008 he has been the President of the Italian Association for the History of Economic Thought (AISPE). Besides AISPE, he is affiliated to various other national and international scientific associations: SIE - ESHET - STOREP - SISE.
As for his research areas, the main lines pursued in past years are these: 1) International spread of economic ideas; 2) Methodological, analytical and historical relationships between economic theory and public policies; 3) Italian economic thought and style.
In connection with the first area, he elaborated specific studies about the scientific influence that some eminent foreign economists - like Thomas R. Malthus and John M. Keynes - exercised on the community of Italian economists.
Regarding the second one, he carried out researches on some "third way" economic experiences such as: a) Italian fascist corporativism in the inter-wars period; b) the market socialism in the Jugoslave system in the period after the second World War, according to Branko Horvat's analysis; c) the Dubcek's attempt (with his main economist Ota Sik) to set up a free market economy in the socialist system of Czechoslovakia (The Prague's Springtime in 1968).
In general, thanks to the above - sometimes, quite different - studies, he aimed at reconstructing the making of economic knowledge as an interactive process continuously nourished by both the scientific effort of economists and by practical and decision activities of policy-makers.
Regarding the third area, it is worth recalling his life-long line of studies aimed at reconstructing the main phases of the Italian economic thought. The period of time examined basically spans from the Italian political Unification (1861) to the end of the Twentieth-Century. Some of such studies concern: a) the debate among Italian economists belonging to opposite scientific and methodological trends (the debate «between the two schools») in the period when the parliamentary majority was changing from the Right to the Left: 1874-1884; b) the theoretical elaborations and those of economic policy made to support or to criticize the protectionist choice at the end of the Nineteenth-Century in Italy; c) the analytical and doctrinaire context on which the Italian economists drew at the beginning of the Twentieth-Century to explain the institution of public companies; d) the Fascist economic policy in the interwar period and also the methodological traits that marked the attempt to build an economic theory of the «corporativism»; e) the debate taking place in the period after the second World War regarding the Reconstruction and development in Southern Italy; f) the scientific confrontation among economists on the economic planning, monetary and income policies in the Sixties; g)the way to escape from the crisis in the Seventies and the Eighties, and to converge at the Maastricht rules; h)the way to escape from the present Great Recession according to the divergent opinions of Italian economists.
At the same time, he also produced monographs and essays on individual figures of Italian economists, like Maffeo Pantaleoni, Costantino Bresciani Turroni and Luigi Einaudi, just to mention the main.
