Language skills

The programs of the School of Economics require the study of at least one foreign language chosen among English, German, French and Spanish.

  • The first-level (bachelor) degree programs (EC, EA, SECI and Statistics) allow students to choose subjects or entire programs taught in English.
  • Of the seven Master's degree programs, three are entirely taught in English; the others, in almost all cases, entail the in-depth study of a foreign language.

On this page, you will find information regarding language courses and exams.

Language courses offered by the School

Bachelor-level Programmes

  • The language courses taught within the first-level degree programs focus on specific economic/business language content and take the student from a B1* to a B2 level of proficiency in English; the level of the other languages may vary according to the students' needs.

  • It is advisable for students enrolled in the School of Business Administration (EA) or Economics and Commerce (EC) to integrate the 3 CFU of English acquired through language test taken at CLA, with an additional 6 CFU of the same language chosen from the list of subjects offered by the School using the credits reserved for elective subjects present in every study plan. This will allow students to study and take with less difficulty any language exam (of the same foreign language) included in the Master's degree program.

The same advice applies to students who, in the future, intend to continue their studies by enrolling in one of the Master's Degree programs in English offered by the School.

Master-level Programmes

  • The teaching of foreign languages in the Master's degree courses is addressed to students who already have a B2 level of English knowledge. The proficiency of the other languages may vary according to the students' needs.

Information for students of the degree courses in Business Administration and Economics and Commerce

Students enrolled in these courses have a mandatory English language proficiency test (3 CFU - first year) to be taken at the University Language Center (CLA). The test is a B2-level reading comprehension test.
The test can be taken from September to June; reservations for the test are mandatory and can be made online at www.cla.unifi.it or at the CLA offices. The dates of the tests are typically available from the 15th day of the previous month.
The test may be repeated every two months if you do not pass.

An additional 3 CFU (not mandatory) can be acquired with another English language proficiency test that tests listening comprehension at the B2 level.

Please Note: The School of Economics and Management has decided not to proceed with the recognition of any external certification aimed at validating the 3 CFU.
Students coming from another School/University who have already taken an English language exam/test can ask for its recognition by applying to their own Degree Course Council; the validation of the 3 CFU will be granted after an evaluation of the syllabus studied.
