Course Content
The course focuses on unfair competition, trademarks, patents and industrial design, with regard to the sources of national and EU law as well as to international conventions.
It is aimed at providing students with an in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of intellectual property law, focusing on actual cases.
In its 9-credit version, the course encompasses antitrust law, of which it analyses the structure and function.

The last part of the textbook is excluded from both programs (Sixth part, “Le regole di tutela della concorrenza nel codice civile”, from pages 667 to the end of the book).
Learning Objectives
The purpose of the course is to provide the students with a knowledge of the fundamentals of competition law and intellectual property law

Teaching Methods
The course includes 72 hours of frontal lessons, and it is composed by two modules (48 and 24 hours), corresponding to 6 and 3 credits respectively.
The first module, of 48 hours in total, is mandatory for all students. It is dedicated to unfair competition, patent law, copyright and the relationship between IP law, big data and new technlogies (Professor Niccolò Abriani), and to trademarks, models and know-how (Professor Alessandra Droandi).
The second module, of further 24 hours, is mandatory only for students who are taking the exam on the program for 9 credits. It is dedicated to antitrust law (Professor Lorenzo Stanghellini). See section “Further information”.
Each lesson introduces the topics of the program and then focuses on the study and discussion of ‘practical cases’ and national and EU decisions related to the matter at stake.

The course can be attended by students of both the School of Economics (Scuola di Economia) and the School of Laws (Scuola di Giurisprudenza).
The students of the Degree in ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT can choose between:
1) a 6-credit course, called “Diritto industriale – Mod. A” (code B019257);
2) a 9-credit course, called “Diritto industriale” (code B015539).
The students of the Degree in LAW can only opt for the 6-credit course, called “Diritto della proprietà intellettuale e della concorrenza”, code B031295.
Type of Assessment
The examination consists of an oral examination on the course program, including at least two questions by each professor (two or three, depending on whether the exam is a 6-credit or a 9-credit course).

6-credit program:
unfair competition, patent law, copyright and relationship between IP law, big data and new technlogies (first series of 24 hours, taught by Professor Niccolò Abriani), trademarks, models and know-how (second series of 24 hours, taught by Professor Alessandra Droandi).
9-credit program:
In addition to the program for 6 credits (see above), introduction to antitrust law, valuation of antitrust cases (relevant market and market power), abuse of dominant position, cartels, merger control, enforcement of antitrust law (third series of 24 hours, taught by Professor Lorenzo Stanghellini)
